Computing Environments and Tools

Modern software development happens across a diverse and rapidly evolving set of computing environments and tools. This course gives students the practical skills to work effectively across local, remote, virtualized, containerized, and cloud-based environments.

Through hands-on activities, students learn to navigate and manage Windows and Unix-style systems using graphical and command-line interfaces, including shells such as Bash and PowerShell. Students work with files and permissions, processes, remote systems, secure shell (SSH), data transfer, virtual machines, containers, cloud platforms, code editors, and other tools commonly used in software development.

Students also explore emerging development tools, including AI-assisted development tools and coding agents. Rather than focusing on any single platform or toolset, students develop the ability to evaluate, adopt, and work effectively with evolving technologies.
